Goalkeeping error saves Gunners blushes

January 28, 2009

For the second game in 4 days the theme is of an Arsenal escape and yet it could have been so different had Van Persie’s shot not crept in. Given the way the game went, it is 1 point gained instead of two points dropped.

Lets face it, Arsenal knew what sort of tactics Everton would adopt. You only had to look at the way they played in the FA Cup against Liverpool to get the idea. And given the need to catch up on Utd and Villa more so who both won, the Gunners should have attacked and taken the game to Everton. They failed to do this and needed Cahill to score to sting them into action.

I don’t know what to make of Cahill. Until we equalised, this post was going to be titled ‘Beaten by a striker-less team’. I revised my title of course and believe Cahill deserves more respect than my initial idea for a title post. It is a player like him that would serve the Gunners well instead of Arteta. Lack of creativity is not an issue, we have Van Persie in arguably the form of his life and his performances recently remind me of a bit of Bergkamp, the way he is opening up defenses with his passing.

We are now 5 points beyond Villa and need to string few victories in a row to close the gap. The determination to get a draw was great but really we need to stop this from happening. At half time I could see this. The lack of efforts on goal suggested Arsenal weren’t up for it. Credit must be given to Moyles’ Everton. Around 5 clean sheets and draws against Liverpool shows a resilience that is keeping them going despite them missing their strikers. Nevertheless unbeaten in 9 games and this should certainly help the Gunners.
