Attack, Attack, Attack? When to stop?

February 20, 2009

I have resisted writing a post for a long time lately. Partly it might be due to laziness, or because of the satisfaction of watching our destruction of Cardiff or mainly since I wanted to write something different instead of the generic ‘Eduardo is back, Alleluia!’ ‘Eduardo is injured again, Oh no’ etc etc. Anyway, I digress.

This post is an extension of the Goonbloggers latest post where the focus has been amongst many on our rotten or allegedly suspect injury table. To be fair, Fabregas has been excellent and his injury is the first major one and the same can be said of Walcott. And much has been done to get them back to match fitness. Let us not forget for Eduardo to come back within a year, play and score is nothing short of remarkable. So yes, it looks horrendous when it comes to the fitness of our players but the fitness team should not be blamed for that or anything like that.

So something must been blamed then right? Yes and No. And now the title of the post comes into effect. The goonblogger wrote how Eduardo was “a victim of his own brilliance “. The same can be said about Arsenal FC as a whole. 4 goals was plenty and in fact even fewer than what the performance actually merited but let me ask you this. Do you want high scoring games, some of which are not guaranteed wins (like the 4-4 draw against Spurs) or churning 1-0′s, 2-0′s etc. Flair or results? It is a tough choice. Ridiculous question to even ask. But consider this, watching Barcelona this season I heard in a discussion during the half time analysis that the boys from Nou Camp tried to score 3-4 goals every game and doing this on a regular basis can surely take the energy out of you in the long run. If you noticed when Arsenal play, the free flowing stuff, goals flow. The interchange of players with swift pass and movements take a lot of energy. Sometimes I feel it would be better for us to just keep the ball after we have scored 2 or 3 goals and retain possession. This way our players would not over-exert themselves and prevent niggling injuries.

What do you think?

First of all, thanks for the mention and great post there!

You have a very valid point, i am also of the opinion that Arsenal’s medical staff are faultless, they do great things with our players…otherwise they would not be there.

I think that the club does not have the technology they have in say Germany, Spain or Italy.. as much was said my the Czech Republic team doctor just over a year ago about Rosicky’s recurring injuries, he went as far as to advise Thomas to move because he will get better treatment etc. abroad.

Our game does put a lot of stress on our players but i do think that Wengers liking of the technical excellence in players is linked with our injury record. Players like this are more fragile and likely to pick up injurties and in turn, royally fuck up our seasons!

Good article again, i will add your blog. Take it easy mate.
