About time we won big at the Emirates!

March 15, 2009

Prior to our boys playing Blackburn, no team had drawn four on the trot at home. And the record stays at three after a resounding win at the Emirates. Originally I was going to comment even before I had an opportunity to see the highlights but decided against it. And what a right choice it was!

Even though we won 4-0 the scoreline didn’t reflect the extent to which Blackburn were brushed aside. Bendtner’s profligacy in front of goal was evident but when that wasn’t even the main talking point of the game. Instead, it was Arshavin and Walcott who ripped our oppoents to pieces. Arshavin’s goal (the one without any deflections) was stunning and showed his confidence and skill to think of the possibility of scoring from that angle when most players would at best tried to cross it across. Walcott’s start, his first in the league since coming back from injury was also a positive sign.

Defensively, we were solid even though we didn’t have much to do. Diouf’s tackle on Almunia was shocking and senseless and reflected the desperation of Blackburn. And Gamst Pedersen’s dive was just ridiculous. I had great respect for his talent but anybody who decides to dive without ANY contact from the opponents should be given a 3 match ban straight away. Our very own Eboue was guilty of this and even irritated Wenger who supports his players to great extent. Against Blackburn though, he gained more confidence with his two goals and I am happy for him. I have always had a soft spot for Eboue since he always gives his best, even though he is technically inferior to the rest of our players. However after the Spurs game where he got sent off, that support was starting to disappear. But the joker of the Arsenal team (and that is off the pitch) deserved his glory today.

A quick mention on the Liverpool result. Of course, in theory I shouldn’t care since it had nothing to do with Arsenal. But it just goes to show that when a team plays really attacking football, it can surprise teams at the highest level. Just a reminder to the teams then who go to some away games with the intent of parking the bus and being content with a 0-0 or even worse a 1-0 defeat.

Roll on Hull, I fancy a revenge mission! We’re getting better and better!
