If a film was made about Arsene Wenger…

March 28, 2009

Normally I’m really big on watching football themed films. I remember a movie called ‘Goal’ or something like that and for some reason I just didn’t fancy watching it. The only football movie I watched and perhaps enjoyed was ‘Bend it like Beckham‘. Call me whatever names you want for just admitting that on here. Now though I’m really keen on watching ‘The Damned United’, a ‘factionalisation‘ as they call it (fact + fiction obviously!) about Brian Clough’s 44 days at Leeds United FC. I don’t know what the record is for the shortest managerial reign at a club but given Clough’s legendary status at Derby and Nottingham Forest it surely is a suprise. Say what you will but I think the managerial characters left in the game that make football special are slowly dying out. And this movie should provide a fascinating insight into what made football special in the days as a result of colourful characters like Clough.

Right enough of promoting ‘The Damned United’. By the way if anyone has watched please let me know if it was worth the promotion! Right then, I was thinking what if a movie was made about Arsene Wenger, what time frame would you choose to focus the film on? Wenger has been at the club for 12 years now and it would be pretty hard to make a general biography type of film. So what bits would you choose or want to see and hear more about in a film about Wenger? This would I guess include interviews, the famous quote “Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife” or something along those lines when Wenger replied to Ferguson’s boast about being the best team in the league when they clearly weren’t, springs to my mind.

What about results? 5-1 demolition of Inter given the pressure to win in the San Siro otherwise we’d get knocked out of the cup, winning at Old Trafford to clinch the league etc. I guess the Gallas outburst would also be an area focused on and if we’re going back then the whole Cashley Cole remark about him feeling a little left out by the French superstars we had back then. Wenger has kept his private life, just that, private. If I hear about him when the season is over its always either how agents try to ring him or him watching international games and so forth. So i guess it would be hard to get much insight about his non-football life shall we say.

And what about the movie title? I would probably call it “In Arsene we trust”?…no wait a bit cliched..How about ‘Victory through Arsene‘, you know ‘victory through harmony’ and well how Arsene has changed the way we try to win games not only on the pitch but also off the pitch…

But what do you think? What aspects would you choose or want to see highlighted if a movie was made about Arsene Wenger ? What would you call it?

I really hated Goal, the only time when Newcastle was actually good. Rubbish film, and this year GOal 3′s out with him in the 06 World Cup. He’s going to have dual citizenship with Italy or something and win the World Cup

Hated Goal 2, they beat us!!

    Crap series, though.
