Expect goals in Arsenal v Middlesborough match

April 24, 2009

The title may sound a little bizarre when examined at first. Boro don’t score that many and at the Emirates our boys have been sound defensively. But think about it again and you might agree with me.

Time is running out for Boro in their quest to stay up. Southgate hasn’t lost a game as Middlesborough manager against Arsenal. On Sunday his team will need to maintain that and/or even better it. This means they will have to attack from the start. Our makeshift defence might be boosted with the return of Djourou and Almunia but my assumption is that it will still be a little shaky.

If Boro attack and are successful, they might just pay for it heavily. Arsenal has produced a deluge of goals recently. To score 4 at Anfield is no mean feat and I reckon most fans like me are looking forward to a repeat of the 5-3 result in the Invincibles season or better still, the 7-0 drubbing given a year or so later. This if I recall correctly is the last time Arsenal celebrated victory over the Boro.

Realistically I expect goals from both. Tuncay and Aliadiere will be the main threats, they have already shown against us what they are capable of. Jeremie has always relished playing against his old club while Tuncay, my favourite Turkish player is another who comes alive in big games.

What sort of team should Arsene be playing in order to outwit Southgate and Co? Have your say in the comment section below.

A 7-0 repeat would be funny- imagine the goal difference that would make!!

No, not thay, reckon a 3-1 to us. Boro are a pretty strong side up front, we’ll be able to smack goals in their faces but we also need to defend well to keep a clean sheet.

Old boys always like to do well against their former teams but it won’t happen tomorrow, they will be nervous. 3-0 to the gunners

That explains it well Terry. I can definitely see Arsenal scoring 3 but not the clean sheet unfortunately. So then, next question is what team to be played against the Boro?

We should drop Silvestre and just play Toure, Sagna and Gibbs at the back. Go on the attack, because the we’re going to leak anyway.

well anonymous (19:44) you got your wish and perhaps mine too. Not a big fan of Silvestre either but now and then we have to back these players.
