Gunners Champions League dream still alive

April 30, 2009

I didn’t see it, the game that is (honestly, I was at work). While I was at work I pretty much barred updates of any sort, positive or negative. Instead my mind did a Hiddink and played the score in my head. At one point Arsenal were winning, another time Fergie’s cronies were raining goals on us. Incidentally, the draw possibility was not considered until I finished work and by then the game had already finished.

The first I heard of the score was from my dad who heard that Arsenal played well in patches, especially in the second half. Neutral reports tipped this, (just very slightly) the other way and said we were pretty much outplayed. Almunia and Gibbs apart, our boys were very much subdued just like the FA Cup against Chelsea. This is frustrating to accept because if and when we play our game not many can cope against it. Still, 1-0 isn’t the worst result, although it does mean we have to win by 2 clear goals. A formidable task it may be but we have to go for it. There simply isn’t anything to hold back.

Many were critical of Adebayor’s performance. As I have said before, his performance is largely dependant on how well Fabregas plays. If there is service, Ade will deliver. Unfortunately it seems Cesc was rather ineffective in this 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 formation. At the Emirates I really hope this formation is ditched and we go for a 4-4-2.

Personally I think Utd are disappointed they didn’t add to their tally because we know what we are capable of. Let’s hope they live to regret this in a week’s time. What do you reckon then eh my fellow Gooners?

    Ademan tends to play like a lost sheep in this 4-5-1 mumbo jumbo. play one more striker and he looks a world beater. simple isn’t it ?

    “played the score in my mind” sounds like you play too much football manger my friend! Seriously though the game is too tactical these days I think, far too much for my liking. If I wanted a tactical battle I would have followed chess. Just play 2 strikers for the rest of the season Mr Wenger, the fans will appreciate it a lot more

    We were rubbish mate, truly. Semi-finals, finals rarely tend to make great match spectacles and in the end the result counts only. thankfully the return is at the emirates and if we get most of the squad back (not including gallas n rosicky) we will be in Rome.

    For me its simple really, don’t try tactics that haven’t been tried before. Nasri started in a more defensive role. That is fine but if it hasn’t had been in place for many games why use it for a game of this magnitude?

    First anonymous comment;

    Pretty sure Ade played as a lone striker last year throughout the season and dominated. Having said that Ade did not play bad. He had very poor service and tried his heart out. The one time he got a decent ball on his chest, he turned Ferdinant and shot over the bar. It was a dissapointing finish but showed the talent that he does have.

    I think you are the first person to say Adebayor tried his heart out, fair enough it is your opinion. You make a good point about Ade being successful playing up front. I also remember however that he played miles better with either Eduardo and/or RVP alongside him.
