Why this defeat will make Arsenal stronger

May 6, 2009

It is not easy to be upbeat after witnessing a nightmare result. If anything it hurts, and to paraphrase Maradona, each United goal was like a bullet to the heart. Arsenal were wounded on their own territory. The fans who sang their heart out the whole game, secretly bled tears. But enough of that. I want to put a positive spin on this result.

Firstly, we lost a Champions League semi-final, the competition Spurs, Villa tried to enter at our expense but have so far, failed. The margin of defeat was huge, but so was the margin when Milan crushed Utd 2 years ago. Where are Milan now? Exactly.

This Arsenal team were missing Gallas and Clichy. Gallas was having an outstanding period prior to his injury and was sorely missed in the big games we’ve had recently against Chelsea and Utd. Gibbs performed admirably well, his slip was just one of those things. Still there is no substitute for experience and Clichy had that little bit more compared to Gibbs. Don’t forget, Utd were fretting over Rio’s fitness. And we know how they play when either Rio and/or Vidic aren’t playing.

United’s goals were down to Arsenal mistakes. Arsenal defended too high up, this was down to misguided desperation. We were 1-0 down and our gung ho start left us really vulnerable. I believe our players will learn to play a more patient game the next time.Nasri and Song had a good game for the Gunners. They looked hungry and fought well for the cause. I thought Adebayor also showed enthuasiasm at times, his tackle on Carrick was not impressive however.

United’s win at the Emirates was the first in the CL for almost 5 years. If you’re going to lose, you might as well lose to the Champions. Arsenal fans who stayed till the end acknowledged this by applauding United and giving Ronaldo a standing ovation.

Most of us are are hurting, but it could be a lot worse. Our club will be back.

The better team won. Man Utd is stronger in every department. That is a fact. Gibbs is part of the team and deserves part of the blame (about 10th on my list of many people to blame) but it does not reside “squarely” on his shoulders as some would suggest…

Whilst there is no denying that Utd were the better side over the two legs, you have to admit that any side missing their first choice defenders will find it tough. As for Gibbs, yes it was an unfortunate mistake but he doesn’t deserve to be slated any more than merited.

Winning and losing are the two side of playing game. But the thing is that they should become more stronger after their defeat.

I think that defeat can only make things better…now the boys will know they need to more determined.
