50th post! Utd Champions but Arsenal can be proud of their performance
Now I didn’t mean to plan it this way, but here is my 50th post. I started almost 4 months ago in January. At first writing about the Arsenal was meant to be part of a eclectic blog. Since then I have developed so much interest in blogging that this Gunners Today has become an entirely separate project. It has been tough at times and it will be tougher when the season is over. I promise not to make this space where only rumours are discussed.
Anyway, moving on, yesterday’s game was not the most exciting for us Gunners fans. I don’t know about you but when the final whistle went I was sickened at the idea that Utd could celebrate a draw as they did. Granted they ONLY needed that but I just felt they could have been more adventurous given they were the defending champions. In the end Utd kinda limped to the title. I believe this was down to a solid Arsenal performance.
Now what I mean when Arsenal were solid, let me elaborate on that. I don’t mean to say we parked the bus, if anything it was Utd who did that. When I say Arsenal were solid, it means that we kept the ball well enough. The idea is simple, don’t give them the ball and they won’t score.
When I started blogging I wouldn’t have appreciated the details of Arsenal’s game that I have come to appreciate now. For instance yesterday’s man of the match for Arsenal had to be Denilson. Even before the game I was of the opinion that he is star in the making. His sense of positioning is probably better than that of Diaby and Song in central position and that showed. I lost count of the times when Denilson was there in crucial positions making interceptions and killing off any United attack.
I have also realised that Song is much better as a CB then as a DM simply because the position demands he remains alert and not hurry the opposition in making a mistake. This ensures he makes a tackle at the right moments and remains sound in terms of positioning which is a weaker attribute of his at the moment.
I can’t seem to remember Utd having a shot on goal which reflects how good the Gunners were. Time after time I was just waiting for the inevitable, in fact I wanted Utd to score a goal to see how Arsenal would react. That never materialised but nonetheless I think Gunners should be proud. Now if only we can back the boys more often and be less critical. I will be writing a post at some point once the season is over so watch this space.
