Dara O’Briain is a true Gooner; And so it begins at Everton
My friend finds the O’Briain hilarious and rates him as the best comedian on mock the week. Personally I’ve never found him that funny, he always speaks too quickly for me to understand what he says. But since I’ve now found out that is a Gooner, I will laugh at his jokes a little more often! Jokes aside, Dara’s piece for the guardian was impressive as he really stuck it to the media with regards to the X years since you’ve won a trophy.
With newer forms of media coming out, more and more people, myself included have access to a platform where we can speak about our football clubs. And it is a good job because conventional media i.e. the newspapers and erm, skysports, have decided that Arsenal aren’t strong enough to be talked about in a positive manner. I saw that image where Gareth Barry featured with Rooney, Torres and a Chelsea player. Yes I can’t remember his name, but the point is, that Sky thought Barry is clearly a more marketable name than Arshavin or Fabregas.
I feel strangely optimistic, I mean we have got rid of players who were integral members of the first team squad but didn’t do much to sustain a positive sense of morale. Now we have a bunch of players who seem determined to right the wrongs from last season. The impressive Nike pledge, available on youtube featuring Arsenal players is illustrates this.
5 years since Arsenal won the Premiership. But it has been 20 years since Liverpool won the league. But the media make our case seem more negative. And you have to remember that before United’s dominance began in the 90s, they didn’t win the league for 29 or 30 years. It might well be that it takes Arsenal that long to achieve league title success. If you survive that period, will you still follow the Arsenal? I know my answer to the question.
It begins at Everton today, a tough start, Mark Lawrenson from the BBC reckons we might lose 2-1. But what does he know. 3-1 Arsenal win. You still have enough time to put money on this. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Predictions (just like gunnerblog.com did, so all credits to him)
Premiership- 2nd place. Chelsea have arguably the strongest squad.
League Cup- Quarter-final/Semi’s
FA Cup- Winners. Wenger won’t mess up on the selection this time.
Champions League: ?? I would have been more confident but I’m not sure. It’s the only competition where I’m not feeling optimistic at the moment.
Top goal scorer: Arshavin
Player of the year: Gerrard
Relegated: Birmingham (I still resent McLeish), Portsmouth and Hull (rubbish towards the end and orange manager)
Promoted: Ipswich and any two
Manager of the year: Owen Coyle (for playing stylish football, doing the double over Spurs and keeping Burnley up)
