The Goalkeeper conundrum – Who plays the next two games?

2009 October 27

Whose Shirt is it Anyway

….and the few after it? Evening Gooners. I hope you are feeling a lot better 24 hours or so later. My disappointment of our Sunday performance was tangible. So much so that I forgot to talk about the goalkeeping issue. However after applying some bonjela , following yesterday’s write up, it is time to discuss this.

Poor Mannone. I’ll be amazed if you didn’t sympathize with the Italian as well. In a way he is a victim of his oustanding game against Fulham. We’re living in a world, where we crave for instant heroes. We live in a world where we give out prizes even when nothing substantial has been achieved. And Mannone is another example of this.  He was already given the honorary title of junior Buffon after one outstanding performance. Heaven forbid a couple of errors later he isn’t labelled the new ‘Taibi‘.

Yes you can highlight the mistakes he made. 3 of the last 5 goals conceded were avoidable had Mannone had the tactical nous and mental determination in perfect symphony. Yet the truth is and (it comes in a series of conditional if-clauses), if Fabianski was fit, despite his high profile mistakes last season, would have got the nod ahead of Mannone in all of those games. If Almunia’s illness had cured then Mannone should never been in the line up against Birmingham, Alkmaar and West Ham. And then there is the question of whether Almunia was ill after all.

This isn’t the first time Wenger has experimented in this crucial position. In Vieira’s final season at Arsenal, there was a period when Almunia and Lehmann only displayed consistency with their howlers. In the end Lehmann won purely on the basis of his reputation in that invincible season. And this goalkeeping merry-go-round surfaced again two seasons ago.

Almunia’s sparring partner Lehmann may have left the club but the Spaniard has more sparring partners now. None of them are better than him but that doesn’t stop him from showing shocking lapses of concentration and poor decision making.

Perhaps Wenger grew tired of seeing the owner of the number one shirt giving anything but the best. Or perhaps he just took the easiest route and made Almunia a scapegoat for our worst ever defensive start.

Either way his experimentation for the man in goal should have ended against Birmingham or Alkmaar. The look on Almunia’s face when the cameras focused on him during the Birmingham match for me suggested a man more than a little bemused by his non-selection. Who knows what thoughts are racing through his head now after being on the bench for another two games?

If a poll was conducted right now, most of us would welcome Almunia and forget his inconsistent performances instantly. On paper he is our number keeper with the most appearances. Experience is priceless, and at 32, the Spaniard is approaching the peak of his abilities. Yet is it so straightforward as that?

In two days time we play Liverpool in the Carling Cup. I’m almost certain Almunia won’t start that game. That is just not Wenger’s style. Instead you will most likely see Fabianski or even Szczesny in the starting line up.

After the Liverpool game comes probably the game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Spurs. Not many times do games in October assume such significance. And considering the closeness of the league it shouldn’t do. However unlike the West Ham game, there is more than local pride up for grabs.

And in an ideal world, you would want to have the issue of the number one shirt sorted sooner than later.

i would rather play almunia for both of these games. he’s started this season poorly but was on balance great last year. yes he made some mistakes vs utd, but every keeper makes a few stupid mistakes a season. last year he was good enough to be absolutely worthy of being in goal for us and it’s up to him to resume that status now. i like him, but this season he did make a lot of mistakes early on, he’s got to get back to his best.

this is our worst defensive start ever? SURELY not….?!

Pls, stop dis ur madness. If wenger haven’t experimented Almunia, would u av known him. U beta write something reasonable or stop writing bcos dis is nonsense. All d players u now clap for, were they not experimented by dis same Wenger. U talk too much bcos u just want to write. In Wenger winning days, were u not surprised & disgraced by his experiments. If u don’t turn a new live, I will neva waste my precious time reading ur spam mail again. Don’t u hnow dat time is money. Bullshit.

It has to be Almunia. He has made a few mistakes but he was world class last year, bar the Spurs game. Other keepers have also been poor this season, including top 4 keepers like Cech and Foster.

As far as I am concern, Almunia is not beta than any of Vito, Fabi or Szczesny. Dey all make costlier mistakes. Almunia is even consistent in his mistakes especially in important matches. Let the choice to Wenger bcos he knows beta than ur block hed.

I’m glad you have sympathized with Mannone and I do feel a certain degree of it for him. However, the rule should have been laid out. Once your first choice keeper (Almunia) was fit he should have automatically slotted in. Unfortunately, the damage is already beginning to show. 2 points dropped which could be vital over the course of the season. But, I understand Wenger’s dilemma. It is difficult to ignore a great performance. He didn’t. Fair enough. However, I hope he does not commit the mistake of ignoring a bad performance. The ball is your court Mr Wenger!

Metal is too hard to absorb anything. Metalhead is similar. U av forgot how Vito single-handedly gave stupid u 3points against Fulham. Can Almunia do dat. He has neva performed such. Last season he cost us all 3pts against dis same Fulham, but dis yr would av been worse if not for Vito’s intervention. Can ur hard metalhead even remember Almunia in Arsenal v Man utd in last yr champions league. Is dat not worse dan 2pts. However, did Vito commit d penalty? Was Vito supposed to mark AZ player for dat equaliser? Stop dis stupid criticism on d young innocent boy.

Mannone had 4 clean sheets in a row, and now 4 times in a row he has conceded and some were down to his inexperience. He should be encouraged and learned a lot from this little run. I still reckon he projects a more authoritative aura than Almunia, strangely, even at his tender age.

However, this may serve as a wake up call for Almunia that his no.1 is not permanent, a chance for him to understand how Lehmann felt, and hopefully up his focus in games from now on.

Mannone should start vs Liverfool, and Almunia starts against Spuds is my vote.
Unless Mannone pulls off another Fulham tomorrow nite, then my vote is void.

Tanx u brother, u understand football beta than those fools who are calling for Vito replacement so soon. Encourage the young boy & let Almunia learn from him & then sit up. Almunia should perform like Buffon, Van Der Save, Cech or even Friedel to claim permanent shirt. He should know by now dat his days are numbered in Arsenal just like Lehman whom he replaced due to poor performance.

I was once a goalkeeper, i know what it take to be young and inexperience keeper. He has to learn from some an experience keeper or loan him so to catch an exposure. I saw a potential in him. For now i prefer almuna than mannone

GFD, you reckon Mannone will start tomorrow? Personally I see more chance of any of the other 3 starting.

Metalhead, there was a similar situation years ago I’m told. Seaman was injured and Manninger step in and did an outstanding job. Even better than Mannone did. The difference? Seaman got his place back straightaway when he was fit to play. Back ups have to be just that.

Stu5, Gooner. Very true. I can only think of 2 GK’s maybe three oustanding keepers if I include Casillas (ignoring his performance vs Milan). Given and Buffon are the only two goalkeepers I would trust. VDS for Utd is getting on, his replacements are worse than our back ups. Cech hasn’t been the same since his injury and that clanger against Turkey in Euro 2008. Even Green who was touted for the number one shirt at our club made a bigger mistake on Sunday.

The thing about Mannone’s mistake on Sunday was that it was a bad technical error. That is hard to justify in terms of experience. Any decent qoalkeepers shouldn’t be doing that, they are the basics.

i simply support Manone. first for his hunger and desire to prove his worthiness.
Secondly he is quicker to learn than Fab/sky. Allumunia is worthless. he is not world class. and error prone.
Keep Manone. We haven’t lost under manone

Here we go again blaming a goalie. What is it about our club and shenanigans to cover our weakness? How did the ball get to him, if
it was’nt via midfielders and defenders who could’nt hold on to it
after our strikers scuffed chances? Manone is a rookie but VP should have scored a 3rd goal with those opps. What about Ashavin who could
beat opponents? I could go on about lack of fighting spirit but to what
use? we had a chance to get ourselves a nice little position and take
advantage of Manure loss and Citeh’s draw mindful that Chelsea’s will have a down time in january because of ACN and we blew it.
Yet soon we gonna hear some player spouting desire to win something.

i must confess i regret being a gunner cos we blame our players to much as for me i support manone and that final i will never forgive almunia for that goal against spurs last season from bentley it was very very very very very embarrasing.manone would not fumble to that extent.GUNNER TILL MY LAST BLOOD

There is support for both Almunia and Mannone here. Good to see.

Unbitten, nice to see you keeping the faith alive.

Goonerbeall, Jkn198, Manmos. yes valid points. No-one is and should be blaming Mannone for the two draws. I even backed him in my previous posts but the fact remains that on 3 of the 5 goals we’ve conceded the Don could have stopped them from going in. It doesn’t mean he is an awful player and this experience will only make him stronger.

Manmos, we’re aren’t talking about Wenger’s experiments on the whole. Please stick to the question and read the actual post properly. (I don’t think you have because you seem to be under the impression that I think Mannone should never have played at all!) Also, please refrain from insulting fellow gooners on here.

Mannone praised on the basis of one good game. Amazing! The boy will be good but not yet. Don’t burn his potential by throwing him into the fire so often.
