Arsenal miss out on the christmas no.1: a blessing in disguise?

December 25, 2009

Wow. Been a while since my last post on here hey. I apologize. Blame it on a combination of Christmas preparations and some part time work. Yes to put it using some cool lingo, I’m making bare paper innit (well at least till the first week of New  Year). All I wanted for christmas was a job and it turns out  I got my wish. I hope you got your wish too?

Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends.

Anyway, back to my post title. The battle for the Christmas number one is over. Chelsea have won it. League tables don’t lie and they have been better. Just as well that we aren’t top of the league at the moment.

Since the Premiership’s first season in 92/93, there have been only 6 instances when the team top at christmas has gone on to win the league. Arsenal have never won the league if they were leading the Premiership at this time of the year. So I’m sure you’ll agree it is a blessing in disguise that we are 3rd and that too, not very far away from Chelsea who will have the likes of Sturridge and some Italian dude (no Ancelotti isn’t coming out of retirement) as the main strikers after the Birmingham match. We know the story with United – the injury curse affects only their defensive areas.

As for us, well what a two weeks for us. From the high (very high for me) of winning at Anfield to the predictable draw at Burnley to finally a somewhat surprisingly one sided result against Hull. The last part of that sentence sounds bizarre and I can only vouch for the first 42 odd minutes I  watched. We looked rather cagey as a team, no fault with the individuals but we lacked  coherence and Hull looked more determined, enthusiastic. Nasri “light(ing) the touchpaper” as Phil Brown put it was the best thing to happen in the game. On a frosty night you need some heat and I’m pretty certain it woke us all up. I missed pretty much everything after that as I was out of the house.

By the time I got back the score was 3-0 to us and we got the result. No repeat of last year’s shock result. This was an awful game for the critics. What could they write about an Arsenal team where the heroes were Denilson, Diaby and  Almunia. They would have to write/say something positive about these guys. They certainly couldn’t say Arsenal were a two man team of Fabregas and Van Persie…

Considering the pre season expectations or lack of it, it was more anticipation for most of us Gooners, we have done amazingly well to still be in contention for the League title. If you disagree, that is fine. Just take a look at Liverpool’s season. I’ll say no more.

Although Van Persie is almost certain, according to Wenger, to not feature again this season, we should have the others back within the next two months. Bearing in mind the tough fixtures towards the end of January-early February we will need a strong squad then.

Sunday’s match against Villa will be the toughest one yet at the Emirates. Even tougher than Chelsea because some still class Villa as a team that we should annihilate. Couldn’t be further away from the truth. This is O’Neill’s Villa that don’t roll over that easily. Since we moved to the Emirates we have failed to beat them at home and comfortably lost 2-0 last year. O’Neill’s Villa have already won at Anfield, Old Trafford and actually beat Chelsea at home. So this boxing day fixture, a repeat of last year should be one that no one connected with Arsenal should take lightly. Certainly not when you are leading 2-0 like we were at Villa Park.

I won’t be able to watch the match live as I’m off again, this time to visit my grandparents. It really sucks (not about visiting them obviously) but since the Sunderland match I have only watched one full match where we won. That was at Anfield. On other occasions, since the game up in the north east, I have witnessed us either losing or drawing. So this might be good for Arsenal if I don’t watch the game.

Anyway, ramble over. Have a good Christmas. Enjoy yourselves. Don’t go too crazy. I’ll be back…

thanks for that, wish you a merry christmas.

You obviously didn’t read the post properly otherwise you wouldn’t have missed the important clause “since the sunderland match”. Anyway, I’ll leave that comment so that everyone can witness your insightful words.
